Blogger: This Site
I have to say I love all the sites. They are all cool and unique in there own ways. The first blog I ever started was on blogger. So I think blogger will always be my favorite. First of all blogger is free unless you pay for a domain. I currently don't pay for a domain but might sometime in the future. You get a lot of free things you can add. You an add linkwithin for free which directs people to other posts on your site they might like. You can add html and it's easy to do that. There is a follow button which makes it easy for anyone on google to follow you. Plus, for people not on google you can add e-mail subscriptions and feed reader subscriptions so people can keep up with your blog on anything. I love all the templates on blogger and they are free so that is something that also rocks about blogger. You can have a private blog where only people you invite can see. There is no option to make only certain posts private.
Wordpress: Wordpress Blog
I like wordpress because I think they have some very neat and clean looking layouts. I also think they are pretty simple and straightforward to use. My biggest issue with wordpress is that there are not many theme options otherwise you have to pay for some of there premium options. Also if you want to make a more complex site you have to have your own domain otherwise there are certain features you can't add for example linkwithin. It is hard to follow people as well but people can subscribe to your blog via e-mail and you can add google friend connect. You can have a private blog that only people you invite can see and make posts private as well.
Tumblr: Tumblr Blog
Tumblr is great for adding short posts and pictures. It is hard for people to follow you though unless they are already on tumblr. Mostly people use tumblr for blogging things they like and adding pictures they like. They have some cool free layouts but for some of the better ones you still have to pay for. The same as with wordpress. It is easy to blog on tumblr and you can have more then one blog the same as with blogger and wordpress. You can't import to tumblr though so if you want a new blog you will have to start from scratch.
You can have a private password protected blog and you can also make posts private that you don't want anyone else to see.
Thanks for posting this--I kind of wondered what all of the differences were, but now I know! Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday!

Thanks for the comment. I know it can be confusing so I hope this post helps people.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great comparison of three free hosted systems!
ReplyDeleteWordpress self-hosted is a different option. It doesn't require much more technical know-ho (if any) than Blogger (most hosts have an easy WP install option). Wordpress software is free to use and there are a multitude (way more than and more customizable than Blogger) of free plugins and themes for it.
For that, it costs the price of hosting and a domain. (For me, that's about $130 a year.) I can definitely see the advantage of sticking with great, free options. I don't make money off my site, so I pay for hosting/domain like I would any hobby. (I've knitted before, that's an expensive hobby!)
Great to find your blog through SITS! :)
Oh, also, it's not really hard to follow people on sites outside of Blogger. Almost every site has an RSS feed and there are free RSS readers, most notably Google Reader which plays nicely with Google Friend Connect (imagine that. hehe)
ReplyDeleteI've written about using Google Reader on my site before, it's easy and fun to use. If you search for "Google Reader" on my site it'll come up. :)
Nice to see a comparison. I didn't even know about tumbler until last month. I am a blogger girl myself because it was easy when just starting out and free. Free is good, at least until you start making money.
ReplyDeleteDropping by to say Hi from SITS.
I switched to Wordpress from Blogger, and I have been enjoying Wordpress, but I liked Blogger too. I do like the wider layout I have in Wordpress though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments.
ReplyDeleteLynda You are right there are other ways to follow people outside of blogger. On blogger I usually use the follow button on wordpress sites I subscribe by e-mail to blogs I like.
Vinobaby I've been on tumblr for a while and like it for some things. I just wish it had more follow options and that you can montenize it easier.
Marcy I'm glad you are enjoying using wordpress.
I switched to wordpress during one of the many times blogger was having extensive issues. I use the self-hosted, and it's great that I don't need a ton of know-how to use it:)
ReplyDeletethepsychobabble thanks for commenting. I do like wordpress and it seems to be the more popular blog site these days.
ReplyDeleteI am like you ~ I started on Blogger and I now have 2 blogs ~ I did get my own domain name ~ Thanks for the explanation ~ I tend not to go with the 'trenders' ~ When I find something I like I tend to stay with it. Am following you on GFC and came from Tuesday is Gone Blog Hop ~ thanks ^_^
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment. I like to try new trends but sometimes I think the simpler the better.
